The Madison County Quilt Trail Project draws a wide and varied range of volunteers who range from six year old kindergarten students to octogenarians at an assisted living facility in Richmond. We have produced quilts in two county high schools, one county elementary school, and one independent school system. The project has an open door policy as far as volunteers are concerned. Quilts are painted on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10:00 a.m. at the Madison County Extension Education Center at 230 Duncannon Lane in Richmond, Kentucky, and everyone is invited to participate.
The most important part of the project is that all the work is done by volunteers.
No one is paid for the work they do. On some workdays, there are more hands than paint brushes. Those extra volunteers make Quilt Trail Collectibles to sell. Their first projects were key chains and bookmarks which require a lot of work for very little return.

An insightful lady announced one day that she had a better idea which was to bid on the Eastern Kentucky University band uniforms that were offered on an on-line auction website and make pillows to sell – a lot of work, but more profit margin. After much discussion, it was agreed that if half the proceeds were donated to Kentucky Extension Homemaker Ovarian Cancer Research Program at the University of Kentucky, the Madison County Extension Homemakers would use their skills to recycle the uniforms into not only pillows, but also bears, purses, doll clothes and tote bags. The uniforms were purchased and the fun (and hard work began). This project has raised over $6000. |
