The quilt project began in Madison County approximately two years ago.  Since then, thirty six squares have been completed, and thirty five of those have been hung. Quilts are usually painted from April to September.

Designs and colors are drafted by Don Hart of Richmond, Ky. Each quilt pattern is hand painted by volunteers at the Madison County Extension Education Center and other community locations.

The quilts are 8' by 8'. They are painted on 4’x 4’ squares, assembled four squares to a pattern, and sealed to last five years or more. Some are painted in traditional quilt patterns such as “Trip Around the World” and “Wedding Ring.” Other patterns have been copied from family crafted items. Also, a few individuals have made and hung their own designs on local barns. The Kentucky Quilt Trail Madison County Project is in association with the Clothes Line of Quilts group, which originated in the Appalachian Regional Commission.
