Have you noticed the many beautiful and eye-catching quilt blocks which have recently been appearing on barns around Madison County, Kentucky?  These lovely additions recognize two very important Madison County traditions:  tobacco farming and quilting. The quilt blocks are the result of the dedication and imagination of the supporters of the Kentucky Quilt Trail-Madison County Project.  The displays are being hung along a designated trail throughout the county.

A driving trail brochure containing locations and directions is now available at the following locations:  Madison County Extension Center, Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea (exit 77 on I-75), Richmond Kentucky Tourism, Berea Kentucky Tourism, and the Visitor Center on College Square in Berea. The brochure is updated at regular intervals as additional quilt blocks are hung.

Quilt Trail Update 2011

  • The Underground Railroad samplers have been hung at the Rogers House on Hwy. 421. Legend has it that quilt patterns, used in a certain order, relayed messages to escaping slaves. The sampler includes Drunkards Path, Bear Paw, Monkey Wrench, Log Cabin, Flying Geese, Shoo-Fly, Carpenter's Wheel, and Jacob's Ladder.

  • On your next trip to Jackson County, make sure you notice the free standing quilts at the Welcome Center. The quilt hanging on the Madison County side is the Jackson Star Pattern painted by the Jackson County Quilt Trail Committee. The quilt hanging on the Jackson County side is the Cornflower Pattern painted and donated by the Madison County Quilt Trail Committee.
